Why Garsen South Ward Is A Laughing Stock

This region began to be a laughing stock right after 2013 when they failed to secure the MCA seat.

We all know this region is populated mostly by the pokomo. The others orma-wardei commmunity are the minority in this ward but they secured a seat for Hussein Godhana at the county.

The main reason for failing to secure this simple seat is because every clan within themselves think they are more superior, special, educated than others. During the 2013 election about 5 people from the pokomo rose to vie for the seat and the repurcusion was that they all lost the post.

We also know that in 2013 there were fewer people who participated in voting because of the tribal clashes but that did not mean the pokomo were unable to win the elections, NO. When we combined all the votes from the pokomo in that region they were more than  2,000 votes which could have by far surplused MCA Hussein Godhana 1,166 votes.

The following were the results from 2013 MCA elections
1. Alice Nakapwepwe 88 votes
2. Babuya Komora 648 votes
3. Ben Maneno 89 votes
4. Mwanashere Mzogolo 630 votes
5. Hussein Godhana 1,166 votes
7. Khalif Mohammed 561 votes
8. Msambala Katana 614 votes
9. Timson Komora 22 votes
10. Naomi Mara 888 votes

So what is the real cause of this struggling amongst the garsen south ward pokomo? Have they learnt any lesson after the lose? Some may say yes, other may say no.

The 2017 elections are here with us, we expect to have our own pokomo MCA representative in the ward. The elders decided they were tired of the 2013 menace and they chose one individual for the seat, and it was Rhoda Raha. She was chosen to unite the pokomo to vote as a block, but it seems its not what is happening on the ground.

There is a group of individuals calling themselves 'youth' whose aim is to fight against the only person chosen by elders, Rhoda. They feel the elders were in favour against them. They feel they are more superior, more energetic, more wise than the elders and the population itself. They are moving from village to village spreading the gospel of 'No Chris, No Peace'.

Ok, we all know that every one has a right to vote, and every one has a right to vie, but is it worth it?

If we take a quick analysis of the 2013 votes we find the orma-wardei having a total of 1,727 votes, pokomo 2,019 votes, and the giriama 614 votes.

If the orma-wardei produce one candidate, and pokomo two canditates then the former automatically wins. The giriama have their own candidate too so dont expect them to vote for pokomo MCA any time soon.

What we are seeing this time is what has happened in 2013. These 'youth' guys are freely moving from village to village corrupting the minds of the youth and the elders are not raising any concerned issue, and by the time they realise its effect it will be too late.

So why the laughing stock?

These people are not united even amongst themselves. They cant decided on a single plan. Everyone think they got a better plan. They dont trust one another. They can be swayed easily. They think only about themselves.

Earlier this year, Hussein Dado visited one of the ward villages and openly said:

''...Munachia makanisani munamwimbia Mungu kuwa sikuye, sikuye hunamuyavya...munamuyavya munamphika ku? Munaniphiika ku? Munahendadze!?''

Meaning this region is known for disunity, they just talk but they cant implement, they are the laughing stock.

If you go around other neighbouring wards the issue of MCA has been settled long time ago and people are just waiting for election date.

So my take?

In this ward the 25 gasa has chosen Mungatana to vie for the governership post. Its not because they chose this ward for they have a huge voting numbers, no. It has less than 4,000 pokomo votes. And its not because they have the 'brains' either. Its because they want to united all the pokomos. The elders on this ward should came together and give a straight forward plan or else they will lose everything and remain being a laughing stock.
